As the Soldiers Went Home, the Gallery Caught Fire
2019
Installation view, Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv, 2019
Yan Xing combines various themes–the gallerist, disasters, trauma, sexuality, collaboration, and monuments through multiple techniques of memory–into this Gesamtkunstwerk, which takes the entire exhibition as its narrative framework. The work adopts a third-person narrative style, using fragments from the biography of gallerist Dvir Intrator as its source material. It explores the current unstable state and tense normality of life through short stories, design, performance and paintings, installations, sculptures, and other diverse media.
Yan Xing often appropriates classic works by past masters; in this installation, works by Matisse, Cézanne, Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly, and others are brought in to assist in the alternating examination of Dvir Gallery in the past and in the present, predicting some kind of inheritance relationship.
