They Are Not Here
2010
Installation view, Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester, 2010
In 2010, Yan Xing invited seven artist friends in Beijing to complete this work. He announced the exhibition location–a hotel room–online in advance. Before it began, he affixed an artwork label to the door of the room to indicate that a performance was taking place inside. Yan Xing played the role of a photographer, capturing stills of the seven artist friends crammed in the room, who were following his strict instructions to refrain from interacting with each other or with the artist. In addition, a camera placed inside the room recorded the entire performance on video. Afterward, Yan Xing moved the exhibition label from the hotel-room door to the inside of the room, marking the end of the performance.
This early piece, which combines performance, installation, and photography, exemplifies Yan Xing's ambition to tell complex stories through a variety of mediums. The role he played as a photographer overlapped with his identity as an artist; the actors overlapped with real-life individuals; and the production site overlapped with the exhibition site. Moreover, this work delved into the mental state of loneliness and confusion experienced by young people during the peak of China's social transition, and it explored the interplay between scenario and reality. As an alternative intervention, it also highlighted the potential for collective artistic practice in China at that time.
